Welcome to the Philosophy Department Blog

On behalf of the Philosophy Department here at Ashland, welcome to our department blog. It is here where we will be posting information on our upcoming events, giving updates on current student activities, faculty presentations and publications, and alumni news. We will also be occasionally taking a look at the history of our department, with its hundred-plus years of activity on the campus. We would be very happy to hear from our philosophy alumni, so whether you are a recent grad or a distant friend, were a major, a minor, or were influenced even by a single class or professor, we would like to hear from you.  Please contact the chair of the department, William Vaughan, at wvaughan@ashland.edu with any news or updates you might find blog-worthy enough to share.

Philosophy Department Welcomes Guest Lecturer Kevin Sharpe

Persons are Animals Too!

In fact, maybe they're ONLY animals...

The Philosophy Department--in conjunction with the Philosophy Club and Phi Sigma Tau--is happy to present

Dr. Kevin Sharpe (St. Cloud State University, MN)

who will discuss the topic of Animalism. Animalism is the view that human persons, such as you and I, are all and only animals: biological organisms that belong to the species Homo Sapiens.

This position has curious and significant implications for a theory of human nature. Dr. Sharpe will discuss the assumptions upon which this theory is made, and provide objections and responses for both sides of the argument. His goal is to try and demonstrate how most of the common reasons for rejecting animalism fail.

Please come for an enlightening and controversial discussion!
