You Can't Teach Ethics in School: Ancient Philosophy & Modern Education

A hallmark of liberty is not infringing on people's minds.  A hallmark of bureaucracy is living by code.  What each modern phenomenon shares is the loss of the inner world as a site of education -- the very world needed for ethics.  Ancient philosophy knew better and so made school a thoroughly ethical experience.  In this talk, I discuss the contradictions of teaching ethics in school today.  Is ancient philosophy more reasonable?

Ashland's Forgotten Thinker: Previous AU President did work in philosophy

William Davis Furry was president of Ashland from 1911-1919. He was an active member of the American Philosophical Association during his entire tenure as AU’s president. His work was prominently reviewed in the Philosophical Review and the Journal of Philosophy. He also did work on the ramifications of Kantian insights for the field of psychology. Dr. Vaughan wrote this article for Accent Magazine a few years back, recalling Ashland's forgotten philosophers. Take a look into Ashland's intellectual history involving philosophy.

Late summer blogs to focus on Department History

From now to September we will have a few posts highlighting the interesting legacy of our department. The first is a link to our departmental history that appeared in Accent Magazine in 2000. While it speaks to many figures in our past, the article does not even mention others, so if anyone wants to share some memories of philosophy classes and faculty of yore, please do so. Second, we will soon post an article on W. D. Furry, a former philosophy professor here who later became university President. Finally, in the fall, we will look at an interesting connection between C.S. Lewis and one of our long-standing courses, Science as a Cultural Force, soon to celebrate its 45th year. Please send all correspondence and reminiscences to William Vaughan at wvaughan@ashland.edu.

Welcome to the Philosophy Department Blog

On behalf of the Philosophy Department here at Ashland, welcome to our department blog. It is here where we will be posting information on our upcoming events, giving updates on current student activities, faculty presentations and publications, and alumni news. We will also be occasionally taking a look at the history of our department, with its hundred-plus years of activity on the campus. We would be very happy to hear from our philosophy alumni, so whether you are a recent grad or a distant friend, were a major, a minor, or were influenced even by a single class or professor, we would like to hear from you.  Please contact the chair of the department, William Vaughan, at wvaughan@ashland.edu with any news or updates you might find blog-worthy enough to share.

Philosophy Department Welcomes Guest Lecturer Kevin Sharpe

Persons are Animals Too!

In fact, maybe they're ONLY animals...

The Philosophy Department--in conjunction with the Philosophy Club and Phi Sigma Tau--is happy to present

Dr. Kevin Sharpe (St. Cloud State University, MN)

who will discuss the topic of Animalism. Animalism is the view that human persons, such as you and I, are all and only animals: biological organisms that belong to the species Homo Sapiens.

This position has curious and significant implications for a theory of human nature. Dr. Sharpe will discuss the assumptions upon which this theory is made, and provide objections and responses for both sides of the argument. His goal is to try and demonstrate how most of the common reasons for rejecting animalism fail.

Please come for an enlightening and controversial discussion!
